Eric Choi is a Hong Kong born writer, editor, and aerospace engineer currently living in Toronto, Canada. He was the first recipient of the Isaac Asimov Award (now the Dell Magazines Award) for his novelette “Dedication” which was published in Asimov’s Science Fiction and was later reprinted in Japanese translation in The Astronaut from Wyoming and Other Stories (Hayakawa, 2010). With Derwin Mak, he co-edited the Chinese-themed speculative fiction anthology The Dragon and the Stars (DAW, 2010; Aurora Award winner), and with the late Ben Bova he co-edited the hard SF anthology Carbide Tipped Pens (Tor, 2014). He was the recipient of the 2015 Aurora Award in the category of Best Short Fiction English for his story “Crimson Sky”. His short fiction collection Just Like Being There (Springer Nature, 2022) includes the novelette “A Sky and a Heaven” which won a 2023 Sidewise Award for Best Short Form Alternate History.
Eric has a bachelor’s degree in engineering science and a master’s degree in aerospace engineering, both from the University of Toronto, and an MBA from York University. He is also an alumnus of the International Space University. Over the course of his aerospace engineering career he has worked on QEYSSat (Quantum Encryption and Science Satellite), the Meteorology (MET) instruments on the Phoenix Mars Lander, the Canadarm2 on the International Space Station, the RADARSAT-1 Earth observation satellite, and the MOPITT instrument on the Terra satellite. He attended the Schrödinger Sessions physics workshop in 2015 and the Launch Pad astronomy workshop in 2016. In 2009, he was one of the Top 40 finalists (out of 5,351 applicants) in the Canadian Space Agency’s astronaut recruitment campaign.
